Every day, thousands of commuters wait for a jeepney without knowing exactly when the next one will arrive. I created ByaHero because I believe we can make that experience better.
There are some problems we experience so often that we eventually accept them as normal.
Waiting for a jeepney is one of them.
You stand by the roadside. You look down the street. You wait.
Maybe a jeepney arrives in five minutes. Maybe it takes twenty. And when one finally appears, there is no guarantee that it will have enough space for you.
For commuters, this uncertainty can mean wasted time, missed appointments, late arrivals at work or school, and unnecessary stress.
But the problem doesn't end with the commuter.
Transport operators and cooperatives face their own challenges. They need to manage vehicles, drivers, routes, maintenance, and daily operations while trying to understand how their fleet is actually being used.
This made me ask a simple question:
What if we could use technology to make public transportation more visible and more intelligent?
That question became the beginning of ByaHero.
From Technology to Transportation
My professional background has always been connected to technology and technical operations.
I've spent more than 17 years working in technical support, solving problems, supporting users, and working with technology in real-world environments.
I also spent several years working directly in the GPS industry.
Through that experience, I learned something important:
Knowing where a vehicle is can be extremely valuable—but vehicle location is only the beginning.
GPS can tell you where a vehicle is.
It can tell you whether it is moving, idle, parked, or somewhere it shouldn't be.
But what happens when you combine that information with transportation operations and commuter needs?
That's where I saw an opportunity.
Instead of using GPS simply to track vehicles, I wanted to explore how real-time transportation data could help people and transport operators make better decisions.
And that's where ByaHero was born.
The Problem We Want to Solve
For commuters, public transportation can sometimes feel like a guessing game.
When will the next jeepney arrive?
Where is the jeepney right now?
Is there a jeepney coming along my route?
Will it already be full when it gets here?
These questions are simple, but commuters don't always have access to the information needed to answer them.
At the same time, transport cooperatives and operators need better visibility into their own operations.
They need to know:
- Where their vehicles are
- Which units are active or idle
- How their fleet is being utilized
- What is happening along their routes
- Where and when passenger demand is occurring
- How transportation operations can be improved
The information exists.
Vehicles generate data.
Routes generate movement patterns.
Commuters generate demand.
The challenge is connecting these pieces of information in a way that can actually be useful.
What ByaHero Is Building
ByaHero is a Transport Intelligence Platform.
Our goal is to connect real-time vehicle information with the people and organizations that depend on public transportation.
For commuters, the ByaHero app is designed to provide a simple experience: see participating jeepneys moving on the map in real time.
Instead of simply waiting and guessing, commuters can have better visibility of the transportation around them.
For transport cooperatives and operators, ByaHero provides a different layer of information.
The operator side is designed to provide fleet visibility and demand intelligence—helping operators understand not only where their vehicles are, but also where and when people need rides.
That distinction is important.
A GPS tells you where your jeepney is.
Transport intelligence helps you understand what that information means.
This Is Not About Replacing Jeepneys
ByaHero is not about replacing traditional jeepneys.
It is not about saying that traditional public transportation has no place in the future.
Quite the opposite.
Jeepneys are an important part of everyday transportation in the Philippines. They move workers, students, families, and entire communities.
The opportunity we see is to give the people operating these vehicles better technology and better information.
Traditional jeepneys, modern jeepneys, and e-jeeps can all exist within an increasingly connected transportation ecosystem.
Technology should support transportation—not disconnect it from the communities it serves.
Why I Believe This Matters
I've experienced technology from the support side.
I've worked with GPS from the technical side.
I've seen how vehicle tracking can help businesses understand their fleets.
And I've also seen how transportation problems affect ordinary people every day.
Those experiences eventually came together.
I realized that there was an opportunity to build something specifically around the transportation problems we experience here.
Not simply another tracking system.
Not simply another commuter app.
But a platform that brings together real-time transportation data, commuters, and transport operators.
That is the idea behind ByaHero.
Starting in Cagayan de Oro
ByaHero is starting in Cagayan de Oro.
This is important to me because this isn't an idea created from a distance.
It is being built around transportation problems that we can see and experience within our own communities.
Our goal is to work with transport cooperatives and operators, deploy the technology on participating vehicles, learn from actual operations, and continuously improve the platform based on real-world use.
We know that building better transportation technology takes more than an app.
It requires cooperation from transport operators.
It requires reliable technology.
It requires accurate data.
And most importantly, it requires listening to the people who use and operate public transportation every day.
The Bigger Vision
Today, the problem we're addressing may look simple:
Why can't I know where my jeepney is?
But the bigger opportunity is much larger.
If we can understand how public transportation moves in real time, we can begin to understand transportation patterns in ways that weren't previously accessible to everyday commuters and local operators.
That can open the door to better fleet management, better route understanding, better demand visibility, and potentially better transportation planning.
We are still at the beginning of that journey.
